Team USA improved to 2-0 in pool play with a 27-0 shutout over India Monday in Women’s Baseball World Cup action at Madonna Stadium in Matsuyama , Japan . Team USA scored 11 runs in the final frame while holding India hitless in the win. Starter Ashleigh Vargas pitched 2.2 innings, striking out four and walking one. Christin Sobeck (1-0) struck out one and walked one on 2/3 innings while Megan Meidelinger preserved the shutout, pitching the final 2/3 innings. Five players recorded three RBI apiece as infielders Keri Lemasters, Donna Mills and Malaika Underwood, designated hitter Bridget Veenema and outfielder Sarah Gascon combined for 15 runs batted in. Lemasters led Team USA ’s blistering 23-hit attack, going 4 for 5 with three runs scored. Veenema and shortstop Jane Uh added three hits each as every player registered at least one hit. “I liked the way we played hard today.” said manager Brian Bright. “We won our game, which was our goal. We talked about building on things we did well and working on those that we didn’t do so well in order to prepare for our game against Australia tomorrow.” Team USA , the designated visiting team for the second consecutive day, jumped quickly on India on with nine runs in the first as 12 batters came to the plate. Lemasters, Veenema and catcher Alex Hebert each drove in a pair of runs in the frame. Team USA tacked on seven runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run, inside-the park home run off the bat of Costes. Team USA hit for the cycle in the inning with Costes’ home run followed by a single by outfielder Lilly Jacobsen, a double by Lemasters and a triple by Mills. Team USA added 11 runs in the top of the fourth and Underwood made a diving catch behind first base on a pop-up as Meidlinger retired the side in order to end the game. Team USA faces Australia tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. |
