SEMENTELLI, UNDERWOOD LEAD TEAM USA TO 11-1 WIN OVER AUSTRALIA

MATSUYAMA, Japan --

Pitcher Marti Sementelli held Australia to one run on four hits in five innings and second baseman Malaika Underwood drove in a game-high four RBI to lead Team USA to an 11-1 win over Australia at the Women’s Marti SementelliWorld Cup in Matsuyama, Japan.

Sementelli, in her first appearance for Team USA this tournament, struck out one and walked four to pick up her first win. After yielding a single in the first, the right-hander did not surrender a hit until the top of the fourth after retiring the Aussies in order in the third. Keri Lemasters, Team USA’s starting third baseman, struck out two in an inning of hitless relief.

Underwood went 2 for 4 with four runs batted in, belting Team USA’s second inside-the-park home run of the tournament in the fifth to break open the game and give the team a 9-1 lead. Catcher Veronica Alvarez was perfect at the plate, batting 3 for 3 with two RBI while outfielder Lilly Jacobson was 2 for 2 with two walks and drove in a pair of runs while scoring twice.

“I thought we played well as a team today, especially with the adverse weather,” said manager Brian Bright. “We came up with a lot of clutch hits in tough situations. I thought we pitched well, played good defense and had timely hitting. It was a well-played game.”

Team USA broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second on Alvarez’s single to score Jacobson from second base. Outfielder Tara Harbert drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases but pitcher Jacinda Barclay induced Karen Costes to hit a fly-ball to center to end the inning.

Team USA added three runs in the bottom of the third, loading the bases for Jacobson, who drew a four-pitch walk to push a run across. Shortstop Jane Uh’s fielder’s choice scored third baseman Donna Mills and designated hitter Bridget Veenema crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Barclay.

In the USA fourth, Veenema was intentionally walked for the second time to load the bases and Team USA would score on a wild pitch by reliever Rebecca Crosby. Jacobson was award a base on balls but Uh lined out to third baseman Christina Kreppold, who beat a diving Lemasters back to the bag to record the inning-ending double-play.

Team Australia spoiled Sementelli’s shutout effort in the top of the fifth as Kreppold laced a two-out double down the left-field line to drive in a run but Australia was unable to capitalize further as Katie Gaynor bounced to Uh who recorded the force out at second base.

Infielder Sarah Gascon led off the sixth with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Jacobson tripled to right and would later score on Alvarez’s single, ending the game as Team USA held 10-run lead after five innings.

Barclay, the first of four Australia pitchers, fell to 0-1 with the loss.

Team USA will face Team Canada tomorrow (Aug. 27) at 12:30 in pool play.
