The 2008 USA Baseball women's national team selection process ... here' the deal.
2008 is an Olympic Year for baseball and most USA Baseball energies will be directed at making a good showing in Beijing. This is important because baseball is making every effort to remain an Olympic program sport. It had become clear that USA Baseball-organized tryouts around the country in 2008 for the women's national team would not be possible.
In 2007 USA Baseball invited female players from around the country to an International Friendship tournament at USA Baseball's new national training complex in Carey, NC. This was done to maintain momentum in the women's program. And Jim Glennie, Director of Player Identification for the women's baseball national program, spent several days scouting for players at the 2007 Roy Hobbs National Women's Championship.
However USA Baseball believes new talent will surface every year. Jim Glennie, Director of Player Identification, and the women's national baseball program coaches have been working to identify new player talent. One tournament was selected in 2008 to scout for additional team prospects. That tournament will be the Women's Hall of Fame Classic in Kenosha, WI on July 4-6 and national team coaches were present to assess the athletes. All players around the country who are in the present database (or subsequently identified) as potential USA Baseball women's national team prospects were placed with a tournament team or assessed during the pre-tournament workout.
Following the Women's Hall of Fame Classic tournament approximately 30 players were invited to a Final Trials in Compton, California at the MLB Urban Youth Academy from August 16-21. On August 21 eighteen (18) players be selected to fly to Matsuyama, Japan for the 2008 Women's World Cup of Baseball from August 24-29.
