USA UPENDED BY AUSTRALIA, 19-6 U.S. loses second straight but advances to semifinals

MARACAY, Venezuela -- The USA Baseball Women’s National Team lost its second consecutive game, falling 19-6 to Australia Friday at Jose Perez Stadium. With the loss, Team USA will be the four seed and will face the winner of Venezuela-Japan, which will be played at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). The U.S. fell behind early, giving up seven runs in the first two innings, and was never able to recover. Starter Loren Smith gave up four runs in an inning of work to fall to 1-1 while Christin Sobeck gave up three runs in 1/3 innings. Clarisa Navarro led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Malaika Underwood added two hits batting in the leadoff spot. The Aussies put runners on first and second with one out for Katie Gaynor, who doubled down the left-field line scoring Shae Lillywhite. Kim McMillan singled through the left side on the ensuring play and was followed by Tahnee Lovering, who sent an 0-2 pitch into left for an RBI single, giving Australia a 3-0 lead. Team USA answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI double to center from Tamara Holmes to drive in Jenna Marston from second. However, the struggles continued in the top of the second for the U.S. as Australia loaded the bases on three straight walks. Gaynor capitalized with a sacrifice fly to right. After giving up a fourth free pass, USA went to the bullpen for the second time, giving to ball to Ghazaleh Sailors, who gave up a flare single to right as Australia took a 5-1 lead. A second sacrifice fly to center yielded a sixth run for the second out but Underwood overthrew the ball at third allowing the Aussies to claim a 7-1 lead. The U.S. added a run in the third on a run-scoring single by Navarro but Australia added a single run in the fourth and four in the fifth inning. Team USA trimmed the lead to 12-6 with four runs in the fifth. Tara Harbert led off the inning with a walk and took second on a hit by Underwood. Jenna Marston pop-up to center was dropped by Amy McCann and Navarros cashed in a run with a single to left. A fielder’s shice by Holmes loaded the bases and Underwood would score on a second Australia error. Laura Espinoza-Watson delivered a run-scoring sacrifice fly before a third error extended the inning. Australia’s struggles continued as Navarro scored on a wild pitch. Anna Kimbrell was hit by the pitch to load the bases again but reliever Laura Neads struck out Nicki Holt and Harbert flied out Australia scored seven runs in the top of the sixth and the U.S. went down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the game. The Aussies were led by Gaynor and Lovering, who combined for seven hits and eight RBIs in the win.
